Display
in Glossop Library.
In
February we had a display in Glossop library on Rotary
and its various charitable activities.

Peter
William Wood MBE.

The
club is very pleased that Peter has received an MBE in
the latest Queens Birthday Honours for serving the community
in Glossop, Derbyshire. Peter
has been Club President twice (71/72 and 88/89) and is
a Paul Harris Fellow. He is also the Founder of the Glossop
Jog which celebrates its 30th birthday this year. Peter
is also the Financial Director of Willow Wood Hospice.
Club
meeting on 28th November.

At
this weeks meeting we were pleased to have the company
of three members of the Tintwistle Scout Troup. They were
the Scout leader Martin Clayton, Scout Daniel Fawley and
his father Chris who also helps with the Troup. Earlier
this year, Daniel was one of about 40,000 scouts who came
from all parts of the world to attend the centenary Jamboree.
The Rotary club were among those who helped to sponsor
Daniel to go to the Jamboree, so tonight he came to give
us a presentation about the Jamboree and some of his experiences
before, during and after the event.
Daniel gave an excellent presentation, being ably assisted
by his father on the projector. He spoke of the early
days of scouting and of Baden-Powell and the way the scout
movement soon became a world wide organization.
This has obviously been a wonderful experience for Daniel
and all the thousands who attended the Jamboree.
Visit
to the Mayor of High Peak.

The
District Governor for District 1050 Mike Payne, from the
Rotary Club of Manchester Breakfast, who led the delegation
to see the Mayor of High Peak, introduced the Presidents
from the Rotary Clubs of Buxton, Jim Swift, Glossop, Steve
Kimber and Marple & Goyt Valley, Patrick Laycock along
with the District Governors for the next 2 years Ken Boylett
[RC of Buxton] & Chris Welton [RC of Wilmslow Dean]
and Rotarians Ian & Kim Priestley [RC of Marple &
Goyt Valley].
Mike
presented the Mayor with a medallion struck to celebrate
the Centenary of Rotary International in 2005 and a limited
edition “Founders” Mug and plate and a banner
for 2007-08. He then spoke briefly of Rotary International
as a worldwide organisation with 1.2 million members in
184 Countries, responsible for the setting up of the United
Nations where it retains a permanent seat and UNESCO. In
1986 along with the World Health Organisation, UNESCO and
the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta it launched a
campaign to rid the world of Polio. In 1986 there were 355,000
cases reduced to under 1000 in 2006 in only Afghanistan,
India, Pakistan and Nigeria. It has one of the largest Foundations
which supports over 750 Post Graduate scholars, 53 Peace
& Conflict Reconciliation scholars and gives over 2000
young business people the opportunity to study their vocation
in another Country each year, amongst other more specialist
activities in support of local Rotary Clubs. He
then explained how Rotary International in Great Britain
& Ireland was unique in the world. Club members electing
their leaders rather than previous incumbents appointing
people as in the rest of the world. The
rest of the hour long meeting was taken with the local Rotary
Club Presidents outlining their programmes for the year
ahead.
The
Mayor has agreed to walk the Glossop Jog with President
Steve.
Enduro
Africa Challenge.
In
November 2007 John Mills will be among 100 bikers from all
walks of life who will leave their ‘normal life’
behind to take up the Enduro Africa challenge to ride for
15 days across some of the most awe inspiring and remote
scenery in South Africa to help health workers save the
lives of many people in desperate need. John came and kindly
spoke to the club about this project. The aim of the bike
rally is to supply at least 100 Motorcycles per year to
the Riders for Health Charity, and these will be the bikes
that are used by the health team. To put it simply Riders
for Health get African health workers mobile so they can
deliver much needed medicine to the poorest and most remote
villagers, the people most in need. Currently 70% of the
children under7 years of age will die this year from malaria
or aids related infections. Riders for Health is aiming
do reduce this dramatically, when the Charity was founded
in 1996 70% of the children under 5 years of age were dying,
in 10 years the mortality rate has dropped and with your
help this can be reduced even further.
To
take part in the trip, motorcyclists like John will need
to raise a minimum of £5000 each in sponsorship. There
will be a sponsored Family Walk on June 10th @ 11.00am.The
walk is suitable for families and older children who are
happy to walk over peaty, sometimes boggy moor and in the
process raise money from their sponsors that will be donated
by John’s participation in the Enduro Africa challenge
to fund Riders for Health. There will also be a sponsored
Tandem Sky Dive in August again to raise money for Riders
for Health Charity. For more information contact John on
01457-858555 or visit www.thestudioglossop.co.uk for more
information.
Glossop
Rotary sponsors new signs.
The
club in conjunction with Glossop and Hyde Round Table agreed
to sponsor the seven main road signs on the approach roads
to Glossop. The current signs are in need of replacement.

Unfortunately
whilst we made a good design the County Council advised
that we could not have the Rotary/Round Table details on
the signs so we are unable proceed with this gift to Glossop.
However
we are looking at other ideas to promote Rotary in the town
so if anyone has any suggestions then please contact us
and we will be pleased to consider them. One idea suggested
is a Rotary Wishing Well. The club used to have one in Manor
Park so it is a possibility.
We
already sponsor several of the waste bins in the High Street
and also have refurbished the benches in Norfolk Square.
Update
as 24th March.
We
have noticed that Windsor seems to have Rotary town signs
as shown on the RIBI website. Maybe its one rule for them
and one for us in Derbyshire?

Be
Prepared.
Our
visiting speakers on Wednesday 3rd January 2007 reminded
many members of their (much) younger days in the Scout movement.
They were Laura Taylor, Gordon Proctor and Ben Pearson;
all are Explorer Scouts. Last year the club sponsored them
on an Explorer Belt Expedition to Germany which was organised
by the Greater Manchester East Scout District.
The
task which they were set was to get themselves from Dusseldorf
to Rhens in a period of eleven days on a limited budget.
The limited budget meant that they had to do a considerable
amount of walking (amount 100 miles) and apart from one
night camping in a bier garten and another on the floor
of a scout hut, they set up their tents on camp sites. They
visited many of the picturesqe places on the Rhine valley
and it was a wonderful experience for them. This completion
of this expedition counts towards the requirements of both
the Queens Scout Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Well done.
Talk
on air accidents in the Peak District.
We
were pleased to have Alan Clark speak to us on 22nd November
about investigating over 300 crash sites in the UK and in
particular details of crashes in the Peak District.

It
was a very enjoyable presentation and he has said that he
is willling to speak with other clubs.

Many
thanks to all involved who made this event so sucessful.
We had around 45 people attend.
Mobile
phone recycling in conjunction with Willow Wood Hospice
and the Glossop Chronicle.
In
the UK we throw away 15 million mobile handsets per year.
Fewer than 10% are correctly recycled with estimates showing
that around 100 million handsets are just gathering dust
in people's homes. We can turn these unwanted phones into
cash for Willow Wood Hospice and Rotary charities. We will
have collecting boxes in the Willow Wood shop in Glossop
and also the Chronicle offices where you can take your unwanted
mobile phone. Postage paid envelopes are also available
if you would prefer to post them. So we will be doing"our
bit" for the environment and raising money for charity
at the same time.

to support our two nominated charities, Scope and the Make
a Wish Foundation. We were pleased to be joined in a lap
by our District Governor Michael Barker. Runners were mainly
from local schools and clubs. We thank everyone for taking
part and supporting us in this annual event.

Next
